With limited seed funding and strong competition from incumbents, the challenge was to validate demand quickly without overspending. We delivered a 90-day PWA for lean market entry, followed by full-scale native mobile apps shaped by real usage data. The result was a trusted, scalable marketplace with 35% higher repeat bookings, lightning-fast transactions, and a future-ready foundation for growth.

About the Client

Our client is a Sydney-based startup founded by a pair of former management consultants with backgrounds in technology and finance. Their vision was to disrupt the Australian home and lifestyle services industry by creating a single, easy-to-use platform where users could instantly book verified service providers, backed by secure payments and transparent ratings. Bootstrapped initially and supported by a small group of angel investors, the founders needed to make every dollar count as they worked toward a larger funding round.

Business Challenge

Breaking into Australia’s crowded on-demand services market posed unique challenges:
  • Uncertain demand: While Sydney and Melbourne showed clear appetite for on-demand services, demand in Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth was largely untested. The startup needed a way to validate city-specific demand without overcommitting resources.
  • Tight early-stage budget: Operating on lean seed funding and cautious about burn, the founders had to make strategic bets. Each feature had to directly support user growth or investor traction.
  • Race against established players: Competing with household names like Airtasker and Hipages, and with Urban Company eyeing the Australian market, speed to launch was non-negotiable. Capturing early adopters before these competitors strengthened their foothold was mission-critical.
The solution needed to minimize risk, validate demand city by city, and scale seamlessly once the winning formula emerged.

We proposed a two-stage delivery model to balance speed, cost, and scalability.

Stage 1: Lean Market Validation with a PWA

We developed a Progressive Web App (PWA) with all the essential features to test market adoption quickly and affordably.

Delivery timeline: 90 days from project kick-off to live launch.

  • We added category filters and smart search to quickly find the listed services
  • One-tap booking feature was added to give users the flexibility of date and time selection
  • We used built-in maps so users can locate nearby providers
  • User can create account to save their details and track past bookings
  • We added secure online checkout partnered with trusted payment gateways

Within three months, the marketplace was live in Sydney and Melbourne, attracting early adopters. The PWA generated valuable insights including: which categories were most in demand (plumbing, cleaning, and personal care), when people booked most often, and which features kept them engaged.

Stage 2: Full-Scale Mobile App for Growth

  • We added the feature of dynamic pricing with auto-applied discounts
  • We created the admin dashboard for client, to monitor the system and analytics in real-time
  • Multiple payment methods, including Apple Pay and Google Pay
The move from a lean PWA to feature-rich native apps ensured the platform could scale rapidly while retaining the lessons learned from real-world usage.
