About the Client

The Client is a New York consumer technology company building dating and social discovery products. The Client’s portfolio already included an established matching product, and the new AI assisted dating profile and conversation coaching app was designed to complement it and maintain seasonal customer engagement through the Valentine’s Day window.

The app runs a free quiz to personalize output, then generates dating bios, reviews existing ones, produces opening lines from match screenshots, and coaches ongoing conversations across Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and other platforms. Premium tiers unlock expanded variations, full profile generation tied to tone and dating goals, and direct copy paste of generated content into the destination dating app.

The Client built the initial product as a Lovable web app for market validation. The prototype proved the founder thesis and drew early users, but the ambitions for a Valentine’s Day launch on iOS and Android exceeded what an AI generated web build could carry safely into the App Store. AI generated code now ships with documented production failure modes around row level security, exposed credentials, fragile authentication, and weak entitlement logic, and a dating app handling profile screenshots and payment data could not absorb any of them. The Client needed an engineering team that could salvage the validation work, rebuild the launch path for iOS and Android, and harden the underlying systems against the seasonal window.

The Client had worked with Clixlogix on a prior project and brought the team in for this engagement while their internal team was in transition. The work opened with a technical due diligence review that led into a full Containment Method engagement to take the app from prototype through to clean App Store launch.

Challenge

The validated prototype was a working product hook on top of an unshippable substrate. AI generated prototypes consistently exhibit a specific cluster of production failures that look benign in demo and break against real users, payment processors, and platform reviewers. For a dating app handling personal content under App Store scrutiny, the cluster compounds. Nine issues defined the engagement scope.

Web origin and mobile production requirement. The validated prototype was a web app; the seasonal launch was committed to iOS and Android. The mobile build did not exist when the engagement began. App Store visibility, Sign in with Apple, push notifications, and the on device screenshot folder all required dedicated iOS and Android builds.

Third party credentials embedded in the web client. The prototype called OpenAI and Stripe directly from browser visible code, with API keys carried in client environment variables that compiled into the bundle. For a dating product handling profile screenshots and payment data, the exposure was a CVE class risk and an active cost abuse vector. The new mobile build would have needed credentials server side from the first commit regardless, since mobile binaries are decompilable and any embedded backend key is recoverable from the App Store distribution. Every backend only third party operation, including OpenAI generation, payment verification, entitlement checks, and sensitive webhook handling, had to move behind a backend gateway before either surface could ship safely.

Row level security gaps and screen driven schema. Supabase RLS controls which rows a given user can read or modify, and AI generated projects often ship with permissive or missing policies that look correct in development. The prototype’s tables had been generated around visible UI screens, not durable business entities. Users, quiz answers, generated bios, subscriptions, AI usage, uploaded screenshots, match context, and deletion records all shared loose relations with policies that did not enforce ownership consistently. Dating data combines extreme sensitivity with cross user query risk; a single missing policy could expose another user’s bio history or chat coaching session through direct database access, and concurrent writes were already losing chat coaching content in the validation environment.

Identity and session reliability under platform policy. The prototype handled email login during testing and broke under realistic conditions. Social sign in did not meet Apple guidelines for apps offering third party login, session persistence dropped users mid flow, and token refresh was unreliable enough to log users out during conversation coaching sessions. Shipping in that state would have lost onboarding completion at the top of the funnel from the first day of launch.

Subscription validation and quota containment. The original payment wiring worked for web checkout and did not satisfy App Store policy on in app subscriptions. There was no entitlement system tying paid status to AI generation limits, no quota enforcement on the OpenAI call path, and no restore purchase flow that App Store reviewers test directly during submission. Launching as built carried two compounding risks, rejection on the first App Store submission and revenue leakage from users on expired subscriptions still consuming AI generations.

Synchronous AI calls and missing result caching. The product’s signature feature accepts a screenshot of a match’s dating profile and returns a personalized opening line. The original pipeline routed every screenshot through synchronous calls to OpenAI Vision with no batching, no caching, and no fallback path. Median response time was unacceptable for a mobile interaction, tail latency was worse, and test users abandoned sessions before the first response returned. Users frequently uploaded the same match profile across separate sessions; without screenshot hash caching the app paid for repeated OpenAI Vision calls and made users wait again for results they had already seen. The behavior would have shown up in launch day reviews and press coverage, and the margins would have been worse than the load suggested.

AWS infrastructure cost trajectory. The Client had set up the AWS account on a consultant friend’s recommendation to host the Supabase migration, with no billing thresholds or budget alerts configured. A bill arrived ahead of launch large enough to make the trajectory unsustainable, and brought the engagement in. The audit found compute over provisioned against actual traffic, S3 lifecycle policies absent so the system was retaining every screenshot at full resolution indefinitely, and self hosted Supabase services running at peak provisioned capacity through validation level traffic. Projecting the same cost shape against launch traffic would have put the seasonal window the Client had built the launch around out of reach before users ever signed up.

Screen load performance. Initial app load and inter screen navigation were slow enough that the validation cohort dropped before reaching the AI features. Bundle size was unmanaged, image assets were uncompressed, and the home screen made several blocking network calls before rendering. The first impression problem would have hit hardest with the press traffic the Client had lined up for launch.

App store privacy disclosure scope. Apple App Store and Google Play both require accurate declaration of every third party data partner an app uses, surfaced through Apple’s Privacy Nutrition Labels and Google’s Data Safety section respectively. For an AI dating app, that meant disclosing AI processing of screenshot content through OpenAI, payment data, analytics, crash logs, and the data deletion flow. The prototype’s privacy labels did not reflect any of this. Submitting in that state created a material review risk on both platforms and could have delayed the launch.

The Client also wanted a new on device feature, a local folder that automatically collates screenshots by match profile, and was nervous about adding new functionality on top of an unstable base before a public launch. Clixlogix took the engagement on a fixed launch window and was responsible for the audit, the production rebuild, the new feature, and getting the app through App Store review without slipping the date.

Approach

Clixlogix runs vibe coded rescue engagements through the Containment Method, a three movement framework that separates prototype validation from production engineering and gives the team a documented decision path on what to keep, repair, replace, or remove.

Characterize. The team froze prototype changes for the audit window, ran static analysis across the web codebase, captured characterization tests against the most fragile flows (auth, payments, screenshot processing, deletion), and ran a security review covering RLS policies, exposed credentials, AI call paths, payment logic, and data retention. The audit output was a risk ranked backlog organized by whether each part of the prototype could be kept, repaired, replaced, or removed.

Contain. The team rebuilt around production user journeys. Each vertical slice (onboarding and quiz, authentication and account linking, bio generation, profile feedback, screenshot opener, chat coaching, subscription, account deletion, observability) was completed end to end before the next slice opened. The web prototype stayed live as a behavioral reference.

Convert. Production logic moved off the prototype and onto the React Native iOS and Android stack with self hosted Supabase on AWS, an AI gateway managing all OpenAI calls server side, RevenueCat managing mobile entitlements, App Store privacy disclosures rewritten to match actual data flows, and observability live before public traffic. The prototype code path was retired at launch.

Solution

Clixlogix structured delivery in seven tracks running against the launch window, each completing a production user journey end to end.

Mobile Foundation and AI Gateway

The iOS and Android build was assembled in React Native with Expo. TypeScript covered the mobile and backend code so contract mismatches surfaced at compile time. The web prototype stayed live during the rebuild to function as a behavioral reference, with the mobile surface becoming the consumer launch product. Push notifications were wired against APNs for iOS and FCM for Android, with permission flows requested at moments that respected platform guidance. The team trimmed the React Native bundle, compressed image assets, and rewrote the home screen to render against cached data with blocking network calls deferred until after first paint; cold start and inter screen navigation moved into a range that held the validation cohort past the first AI interaction.

The team replaced direct backend only third party calls in the prototype with a backend AI gateway hosted on the API service. OpenAI credentials and Stripe secret keys moved to AWS Secrets Manager; nothing the mobile binary or any web surface contains can leak a working backend key. The gateway centralizes quota enforcement, prompt template versioning, request logging for cost visibility, retry behavior on transient failures, and abuse limits keyed to entitlement state. The AI Gateway handled OpenAI calls, entitlement checks, and web payment verification paths, while RevenueCat remained the mobile subscription source of truth. Direct OpenAI calls from any client surface were eliminated as a class.

Why This Mattered

Mobile binaries are decompilable, so any key embedded in the app is recoverable from the App Store build. Moving every third party credential behind a backend AI gateway closed the exposure as a class, across both the mobile and web surfaces.

Schema and Row Level Security

The database moved off Supabase Cloud onto self hosted Supabase on AWS, with the schema redesigned around durable business entities. Users, quiz answers, generated bios, subscriptions, AI usage, uploaded screenshots, match context, and deletion records each got clean tables with ownership keys and clear relations.

Row level security policies were authored against actual access behavior and reviewed by a second engineer before merge, with every policy paired to integration tests that confirm a user cannot read or write another user’s rows under any code path. The chat coaching write path moved to append only semantics, eliminating the concurrent write loss the prototype had been carrying. Migration scripts gave the Client a path to ship schema changes after launch without manual database surgery.

Identity and Subscription Compliance

The team replaced the prototype auth scaffold with a production identity stack built around self hosted Supabase Auth on AWS, Sign in with Apple, and Google OAuth. App Store policy required Sign in with Apple given the presence of other social login options. Session tokens moved to secure device storage with silent refresh, removing the mid session drop outs that had been damaging onboarding metrics.

RevenueCat replaced the prototype’s direct Stripe integration on mobile, with Stripe retained for the web subscription path. Entitlement state flowed from RevenueCat into the application through the AI Gateway, so that AI generation quotas, premium tone options, expanded bio variation counts, full profile generation, and ongoing chat help respected the user’s paid status in real time. The team built and tested restore purchase flows against App Store reviewer behavior, which is the failure point that most first time submissions hit.

Account linking logic resolved the common case of users who started on web with email and continued on mobile with Apple. Quiz responses, generated bios, and subscription state followed the user across devices without duplicate accounts.

AWS Cost Containment and Right Sizing

The team audited every active AWS service against actual usage and rebuilt the cost surface around the workload’s real shape before the app went public. ECS Fargate replaced over provisioned EC2 instances for the API service, scaling to traffic and idling outside peak. The API and supporting Supabase service containers were resized around real traffic, with scalable service definitions where appropriate, while RDS was right sized separately based on query behavior.

S3 lifecycle policies deleted screenshots after 30 days to match the privacy commitment the app makes to users, ending the indefinite full resolution retention that had been compounding monthly. Cloud storage was used only for AI processing and short term retrieval; the persistent match folder remained local on the device. The team bounded CloudWatch log retention across services to debugging windows that matched actual operational need.

Consulting Insight

The pre launch AWS bill was the trigger that brought Clixlogix in. Right sizing compute, deleting screenshots after 30 days, and bounding log retention turned an unsustainable trajectory into a flat cost surface the seasonal window could open against.

Screenshot Processing and Latency Reduction

The screenshot processing pipeline was rebuilt around the real user interaction flow. Screenshots upload to S3 with a signed URL, trigger a Lambda function that calls OpenAI Vision through the AI Gateway asynchronously, and return results to the mobile client through a WebSocket subscription that replaced the prior blocking HTTP call. Median response time dropped to a range that the product surface could support.

Result caching at the screenshot hash level meant that returning users seeing the same match’s profile in a follow up session did not incur a second OpenAI call. The client side preprocessed screenshots before upload, reducing payload size and shortening the round trip. Together the caching and async pipeline addressed both the latency problem and the cost surprise the prototype had been carrying from repeat screenshot uploads.

On Device Profile Folder Feature

The new feature collates a user’s screenshots locally into folders keyed by match profile, so that conversation context follows a single match across multiple sessions without storing the screenshots on Clixlogix infrastructure. The folder runs entirely on device using local storage, which removes the AWS cost implications of cloud syncing every screenshot and gives the Client a privacy positioning point.

Profile identification uses an on device classification step that runs in milliseconds against a local model, so the user does not pay a network round trip every time they open a folder.

App Store Submission and Privacy Disclosure

Clixlogix handled the submission packaging directly. Privacy disclosures were rewritten against the actual data flows, including AI processing of screenshot content through OpenAI, payment handling through RevenueCat and Stripe, analytics, crash reporting, and deletion behavior. Subscription terms appeared inside the app with the wording reviewers expect.

Both iOS and Android submissions cleared review on their first submissions, which is unusual for any consumer app and rare for AI products in the dating category.

Results

The app launched on the planned seasonal window with AWS spend tracking against the stabilized cost surface. Four launch outcomes followed.
